Eremon sounds like a mythical land in Lord of the Rings or distant planet in Star Wars, but we’ve all been there!

2000 YEARS AGO, IT WAS AN INSTRUMENT OF DEATH. Today, the cross is one of the most universally recognized symbols of hope! Such is the power of God. This Lent, I’m preaching a 5 part sermon series called Cross Words: There’s Power in the Cross! The series explores and celebrates the life-giving power of the cross.

Eremon
In this first episode, Cross Training, we go to the wilderness with Jesus. Luke uses the term eremon, which sounds like a mythical land in Lord of the Rings, or a far off planet in the Star Wars trilogy but literally translated means: desolate, desolation, or desolate place. We’ve all been to eremon at one time or another.

If you’ve ever been confronted with a life threatening illness, you’ve probably been to eremon. Or if you’ve experienced the death of a loved one, you’ve probably been to eremon. If you’ve lost your job, or experienced a marital breakdown, chances are you’ve been to eremon. It’s that place of utter desolation.

It’s in eremon, though, that our own inner voices and demons get confronted. In eremon we make the decision about new directions for our lives, and who we will follow. Do we choose the ways of death, compromising on a trickle of vinegar when we are dying of thirst, or do pick the cross of self-denial and follow the way of Jesus which leads to the crystal clear, life-giving waters of the abundant and life eternal.

What kind of wildernesses have you experienced in your life? Have you ever felt alone, or in a desolate place? Did you feel tempted, as Jesus was, to find quick and easy solutions? Or did you have to make some much bigger and more profound decisions for your life?

Love,
Mark
